ALBAWABA - Lebanese inventor Abbas Abdel Karim Diab, from the southern town of Jouaya, recently won the Excellence Award (gold medal) at the International Exhibition of Inventions and Innovations held in Canada (iCAN-2025) for his pioneering invention, ARIES, which aims to support civil defense and rescue teams in dangerous environments.

This innovation is an autonomous exploration, intervention, and rescue system that relies on artificial intelligence and robotics technologies to support rescue teams. It represents a qualitative addition to Lebanon's global innovation journey.

Diab pointed out that his idea began in 2021 with the X-ROBOT project to detect unexploded ordnance. It then evolved and expanded in stages to become the fully autonomous and manual ARIES rescue robot for disaster response.

It includes SLAM technology for real-time navigation, thermal imaging and depth cameras for detecting survivors under rubble, a multi-purpose robotic arm, a fire sprinkler system, and gas sensors for maximum safety.
