Italian Prime Minister Giuliano Amato committed himself during telephone talks with Libyan leader Moamer Kadhafi to strengthening relations with Libya, state television reported Wednesday.

Amato said "Italy is concerned about improving relations with Libya, which are developing positively."

He also said he wanted to "develop relations between Europe and Africa, via Libya, which is Africa's gateway to the European continent," the television said.

Italian Foreign Minister Lamberto Dini visited Libya August 8 and discussed Libyan compensation claims for Italian colonialism.
