GE Healthcare, a unit of General Electric Company, announced that it has been awarded the contract to provide the latest in medical diagnostic imaging technologies to Welcare Hospital in Dubai, owned and managed by the Varkey Group.

The deal, valued at AED 15 million, will see GE revolutionising the hospital’s radiology facility with the most advanced innovations, including a 16-slice computed tomography (CT) system and a 1.5 Tesla magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system – the most powerful in the UAE - enabling the most rapid diagnosis of diseases in the shortest examination times.

“Welcare is committed to continuously upgrading its technology in order to reduce the time needed for diagnosis of an illness and enabling more rapid treatment,” said Michael Stroud, CEO, Welcare Hospital. “These new diagnostic imaging systems will go into service shortly, and with GE as our partner, we will fulfill our common goal of providing the best medical care and health services to our patients.”

Welcare Hospital will be the first healthcare facility in the UAE to benefit from the latest advances in modern MR imaging. Based on the state-of-the-art EXCITETM technology and the newly introduced 8 channel coil capability, this will improve image quality, allowing more confident and accurate diagnosis; this combined with shorter acquisition times will enable the hospital to complete an MRI exam in significantly less time than with traditional systems.

GE will also supply the latest advances in clinical software with patient motion correction - PROPELLERTM - allowing the examinations of patients who would have required sedation or anaesthesia previously. A new breast MRI capability – VIBRANTTM – for breast lesion and tumour characterisation studies in addition to the latest time-resolved MR angiography – TRICKSTM - especially for studies of the blood vessels in the legs and neck will also be provided to Welcare Hospital.
