Jordan’s Fastlink recently added a fifth switch to its telecom network and is currently installing a sixth. Both switches were provided by Germany’s Siemens Company. The new switches are part of Fastlink’s $120 million expansion scheme, carried out in a bid to boost its of subscriber base from 750,000 to 1.2 million.
Fastlink began the year 2001 with two cellular switches and around 300 cell sites. Now, the company has more than 800 cell sites, confirmed Basem Rousan, Fastlink’s deputy general manager and director of engineering department.
Alongside its expansion plan, Fastlink is extending the coverage of its General Packet Radio System (GPRS) to include the entire Kingdom by the end of 2002. Since the beginning of the company’s trial period in June 2001, Fastlink has reached coverage across most of Amman.
Fastlink was launched in 1995 as a private shareholding company operating the first GSM cellular network in the Kingdom. The network is currently the largest mobile phone provider in the country. — (menareport.com)
