The UK-based engineering consultant Mott MacDonald has been assigned the construction management role on expansion of Fujairah Port, which is expected to cost $80 million.
The expansion project is designed to accommodate the new generation of larger ships up to capacity of 6,000 TEU and bulk carriers up to 90,000 dead weight tons (DWT), reported Gulf News. The port currently offers facilities for container freight vessels of capacity 4,000 TEUs and 60,000 DWT for bulk carriers.
On August 1, 2000, a design and construct contract was awarded to Belgium’s Six Construct for expanding the Port’s berths by another 600 meters (from the existing 774 meters), at 15 meters depth, and providing an additional 100 meters of berth for tugs and service vessels. Mott MacDonald provided tender design, documentation and evaluation services for this contract. Construction of the new berth facilities is scheduled for completion in 2002.
The Port of Fujairah, located on the UAE’s east coast in the Gulf of Oman, is one of the region’s main ports serving India, East Africa and the Gulf. In 1999, it handled over 12 million tons of cargo, including over 565,000 TEUs of container shipments and export of 2.9 million tons of high quality aggregates. –(Albawaba-MEBG)
