DHL air express courier recently opened a new one million Emirati Dirham ($272,000) service and sales center in Karama, Dubai, in order to handle the projected 20 percent increase in shipment demand by 2003.

The new 5,500 square meter center is part of a major capital investment program launched earlier this year, already having invested four million dollars into new express logistics facilities in the Dubai Airport Free Zone, Abu Dhabi and Al Ain.

The Karama site includes a service center, a logistics operation and strategic parts warehouse. DHL recruited additional courier and administration staff for the new Karama operation, which incorporates automated IT solutions for route optimization allowing the process flow of both small and large consignments. The carrier is also planning to recruit additional couriers to service downtown Dubai.

US-based DHL was established in 1969. The air express company set up in the UAE in the mid-seventies, the first carrier to open an office in the Emirates. DHL has its own distribution network in the region, the first ISO accredited system in the Middle East. — (Menareport.com)
