Engineering firm CB&I has been awarded a lump-sum turnkey contract valued at approximately $50 million for all tankage at the grassroots Sohar Refinery, located 250 kilometers northwest of Muscat, Oman.
The refinery is owned jointly by the Sultanate of Oman and Oman Oil Company. Booked in the third quarter of 2003, CB&I's contract is with JGC Corporation, the main EPC contractor for the one billion dollar facility.
CB&I's work scope includes engineering, material supply, fabrication, construction, testing, painting and insulation of 55 miscellaneous storage tanks, 16 spheres and one elevated water storage tank. The project is scheduled for completion by the end of 2005.
When finished, the project will provide the refinery with more than one million cubic meters of bulk liquid storage and more than 40,000 cubic meters of pressurized storage for propylene and liquid petroleum gas (LPG). The total amount of steel to be used in the project exceeds 25,000 metric tons.
CB&I has worked in Oman since the 1970s and has built several large-scale tankage projects, including a 600,000 barrel storage facility in Muscat in 1999 and a one million barrel storage facility in Mina Al-Fahal in 1993.
