The Algerian national statistics bureau has recently revealed that the country’s foreign trade balance had achieved an $809 million surplus in July 2000, compared to $507 million in July 1999.
In an August 20th article appearing in the Algerian daily, Al-Yawm, additional statistics revealed that the local exports had hit $1.64 billion in July 2000, a 22 percent increment compared with the corresponding period of last year.
The value of the Algerian imports grew to $830 million in July 2000, a slight rise of 0.24 percent, compared with July 1999.
Additional figures publicized by the statistics bureau showed that the local petroleum exports had increased to $1.6 billion in July 2000, up from $1.29 billion in July 1999, representing a 22 percent rise. This rise, according to this source, was largely attributed to the increasing oil prices in international markets. During the period in question, petroleum exports constituted 97 percent of the country’s total exports.
