Bakers affiliated to the General Union of Algerian Shopkeepers and Craftsmen (UGCAA) gave notice of strike action on Saturday, which length will be fixed shortly by the National Bakers Committee during an extraordinary UGCAA meeting.
According to APS, this protest action, decided during a meeting held in Algiers, is meant to back the claims on "increasing the profit margin and the urgent settlement of the sensitive question of the price of the flour suitable for making bread and bread," UGCAA president, Medjdoub Abdessalam stated.
Bakers' representatives explained that the current profit margin was not enough given the volume of "important" burdens weighing on the bread production process. They also complained about the increase of various in-put prices (gas, electrical power, water and yeast) without them being adjusted to the increase of purchase prices, increases that oftentimes reduce their profit margin.
