The Egyptian minister of transportation, Ibrahim Al-Demeiry, has recently said that the government has prepared a development plan for the Alexandria seaport, with an estimated price of EP 800 million, reported Al-Hayat.
The port of Alexandria is Egypt’s main harbor, with three-quarters of the country’s foreign trade passing through it. Dating all the way back to 1900 B.C., its spreads over an area of 9,600,000 square meters, with a handling capacity of 23.2 million tons a year. The port is divided into two- with one part devoted to general cargo, while the second handles petroleum or bulk cargoes. The port of Alexandria has an annual traffic of about 22 million tons.
Additional ports include Dekheila, Dameitta, Port Said and Suez ports at both ends of the Suez Canal. According to the report in Al-Hayat, the minister recently inaugurated the new seaports of Al-Ain and Al-Sukha in the Suez district.
With access to the Mediterranean Sea, the Red Sea and the Suez Canal linking the two, Egypt is a country naturally geared towards the utilization of its geographical location for maritime transportation. Egypt’s ports have a total cargo handling of 51 million tons annually. –(Albawaba-MEBG)
