ALBAWABA - Tensions between the United States and Iran are once again escalating as President Donald Trump warned on Sunday of potential military action if Tehran does not reach a deal regarding its nuclear program.
In a phone interview with NBC, Trump stated, “If they don’t reach an agreement, there will be bombing like never before.” He also floated the idea of imposing secondary tariffs on Iran, similar to measures taken during his previous term. Trump’s remarks followed reports of indirect negotiations currently taking place between U.S. and Iranian officials.
Meanwhile, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian confirmed that Tehran rejected direct talks with Washington, responding to a message from Trump through mediation by Oman. During a cabinet session, Pezeshkian stated that while direct talks are off the table, indirect negotiations remain possible.
“We have never rejected negotiations,” Pezeshkian said. “But the issue lies in the Americans’ failure to uphold previous commitments. Rebuilding trust is necessary, and how the U.S. proceeds will determine whether talks continue.”
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi echoed this position, affirming that Tehran delivered a formal response to the U.S. via Oman, and reiterated Iran’s stance of refusing to negotiate under threat or pressure.
The rhetoric marks a sharp turn in U.S.-Iran relations and signals the possibility of renewed conflict. With both sides sticking to firm positions, the global community watches closely to see whether diplomacy can prevail — or whether Trump's administration is on the brink of opening a new front of war in the Middle East.
