Who is Mohammad Bagher Zolghadr, Iranian official replacing Ali Larijani?

ALBAWABA - Iran has appointed Mohammad Bagher Zolghadr as the new secretary of the Supreme National Security Council of Iran, replacing Ali Larijani, who was killed in an Israeli airstrike on Tehran.

On March 16, the Israeli military targeted Iran's second most important official, Ali Larijani. The Defense Minister Israel Katz confirmed his death on Tuesday, March 17.

Israeli Channel 14 also mentioned that Gholamreza Soleimani, a senior officer in the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and commander of the paramilitary Basij forces, was also targeted in the attack that killed Larijani.

Who is Mohammad Bagher Zolghadr?

Mohammad Bagher Zolghadr was a former Iranian Revolutionary Guard (IRGC) commander. He had been serving as the secretary of Iran's Expediency Council.

He was born between 1954 and 1955 in Fasa city, Shiraz. Before the Islamic revolution, he received a bachelor's degree in economics from the Faculty of Economics, University of Tehran. 

Zolghadr earlier served as the deputy for strategic, societal security and crime prevention affairs in the judicial system of Iran. He is also a former Deputy Interior Minister for Security Affairs under Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

He is on the sanctions list for his involvement in the regime's nuclear and missile programs.
