ALBAWABA - On Saturday, Al-Quds Brigades Jenin Battalion commander Yazid Ja'aysa was killed in fierce battles with Palestinian Authority (PA) security personnel near the Jenin refugee camp in the northern West Bank. Two children and other citizens were injured in the clash.
PA soldiers trying to enter the camp early in the morning sparked confrontations. A tense standoff in portions of the city ensued as resistance fighters fired and exploded PA trucks. PA soldiers encircled Jenin Hospital, searched ambulances, and blocked access. PA forces reportedly took Ja'aysa's body.
Hamas called Ja'aysa a "martyr commander" and criticized the PA's actions. The group called the PA's targeting of resistance fighters a dangerous escalation at a time when unity is needed.
Anwar Rajab, PA spokesperson, said the effort sought to "restore law and order" in Jenin and combat "illegal armed groups." PA operations allegedly thwarted a vehicle bomb in the camp.
This follows the PA's admission earlier this week of killing 19-year-old Palestinian Rabhi Shalabi in Jenin violence. The West Bank has seen 13 Palestinian deaths from PA operations since October 2023.
Jenin resistance organizations were furious when PA soldiers apprehended two people. Jenin Battalion fighters hijacked PA cars and demanded detainee release. When the PA refused, fighting broke out.
Resistance fighters fought Israeli forces near Salem military checkpoint and Balata refugee camp near Nablus. Israeli military vehicles were reportedly bombed during these incidents.
As Israel's Gaza offensive continues, West Bank violence has risen, causing more casualties. Since October 2023, Palestinian authorities report 811 deaths and 6,450 wounded. Critics say the PA detains Palestinians wanted by Israel, escalating tensions. Though court orders have been issued, over 150 Palestinians, including resistance members, students, and journalists, remain in PA custody, according to rights groups.
