ALBAWABA - Social media groups for Egyptian parents have been rocked by controversy when it was alleged that an official school textbook had a "flag" linked to LGBTQ+ rights.
In reaction to these claims, a Ministry of Education spokeswoman has categorically denied that there is any link between the subject of homosexuality and the English language textbook "Hello," which is intended for first-year middle school pupils. In contrast to the LGBTQ+ rainbow flag, which has six colors, the textbook's flag only has three, the representative said, calling the commotion a "artificial controversy."
A team of specialists from a variety of disciplines, including education, psychology, and curriculum design, develops the curriculum in order to connect it with "Egypt's Vision 2030" educational objectives, the ministry said in an official statement to Erem News.
The ministry asked all parties to "exercise caution and accuracy" before making baseless accusations and denounced what it called a "predatory approach" by certain persons towards educational materials.
This event brings to light the continuing discussions in Egypt over the substance of education, especially when it comes to delicate social problems.
