ALBAWABA - In an already violent conflict, reports suggest Ukraine may build nuclear weapons as Donald Trump's return raises the likelihood of less U.S. funding.

Ukrainian researchers told The Times (UK) that Kyiv could build a nuclear bomb in months without U.S. cooperation. Ukraine may make the bomb with plutonium from spent nuclear fuel rods, according to the report. This has sparked global debate over Kyiv's objectives and conflict escalation.

The Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs promptly dismissed the charges as unfounded. Ukraine's spokesperson, Georgiy Tykhy, said, "Ukraine does not possess, develop, or intend to pursue nuclear weapons." He stressed that Ukraine's IAEA cooperation assures thorough control of its peaceful nuclear resources.

Ukraine's NATO membership bid has raised concerns about its nuclear ambitions. Bild (Germany) said that Kyiv may explore nuclear weapons if diplomatic efforts fail. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky earlier stated that Ukraine needs nuclear weapons or strong alliances to defend itself.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Moscow will not allow nuclear advances in Ukraine. A red line that would destabilize the region, he said.

Russia-focused political analyst Bassam Al-Bunni told Erem News that Ukraine may create nuclear weapons with the right ingredients. He added that building a nuclear detonation mechanism is complicated and takes time and expertise.

However, analysts like Nabil Rashwan believe the notion is media hype meant to bolster morale rather than reflect reality. Rashwan stressed that Ukraine's NPT commitments preclude such possibilities.

As President Joe Biden's term winds down, American support for Ukraine is questionable. Biden has asked Congress for more aid, while Trump has promised to pressure Putin to resolve the situation if re-elected. Trump also suggested increasing Ukraine funding if negotiations fail.

Kyiv denies pursuing nuclear weapons, but shifting geopolitics and fragile relationships provide several options. Conflict dynamics will determine if Ukraine's nuclear potential materializes.
