Unnamed pensioner had just been to outpatient clinic complaining of dizziness.

A pensioner on a hospital escalator helplessly rolled head over heels back down the metal steps several times before a doctor rushed to his aid.

The unnamed 70-year-old man had just visited Yantai Yeda Hospital's outpatient clinic, in East China's Shandong Province, on January 14 after experiencing dizziness.

The accident happened as he was leaving to return home, the hospital reported.

CCTV footage from the basement level shows the pensioner shuffling towards the escalator and trying to ride it towards the ground floor.

Moments after he gets on, he loses his balance, falls backwards and hits his head on the steps.

The elderly man then rolls four more times as the steps keep moving and he is unable to sit or stand up.

He disappears from view as he continues his ascent while lying upside down.

At this point, Doctor Zhao Hongquan, head of radiology, runs over and halts the escalator by pressing the emergency stop button.

Doctor Zhao said: 'I had just clocked off and was heading home when I spotted the pensioner rolling down the escalator.

'I followed our training and stopped the escalator before calling my colleagues for help.'

Other on-call medics and a hospital security guard are later seen carrying the pensioner into a room for treatment.

He reportedly suffered a one-inch gash on his forehead but had no broken bones or other serious injuries.

The pensioner was discharged after 20 minutes.
