Gen. Tommy Franks, the U.S. military officer who would head any U.S. attack on Iraq, met Monday with senior Turkish military officials to discuss a possible Iraq operation.
Franks said that while Iraq and Afghanistan were discussed, he made no specific request to use Turkish bases or air space. "We made no requests of Turkey for specifics with regard to the positioning of any forces or any assets vis-a-vis operations in Iraq," Franks said.
Franks, who was accompanied by Gen. Joseph W. Ralston, commander of U.S. forces in Europe, spoke after meeting with the head of the Turkish military, Gen. Hilmi Ozkok, AP reported.
Franks told reporters before his departure that Washington had not reached any decision on military action in Iraq. "The president of the United States has not made a decision to go to war," he said. "The course toward war would not be favored, but I think it's appropriate for all of us to consult."
Franks was expected to leave for Egypt later Monday. (Albawaba.com)
