UN Human Rights High Commissioner Mary Robinson hailed Sunday Bahrain’s emir, Sheikh Hamad bin Issa Al Khalifa, for his support for human rights, reported the Gulf Daily News.
In a message to the emir, she expressed appreciation for the statement he made marking the UN International Day in support of torture victims.
Robinson also hailed as a positive step the government’s decision to become party to a number of human rights treaties and conventions such as the international convention on the elimination of all forms of racial discrimination, the convention against torture and the convention on the rights of the child.
She expressed pleasure at Bahrain’s continued interest in working with the high commissioner's office for the implementation of a technical cooperation project.
Robinson confirmed that her office had agreed to conduct a workshop in Bahrain in September for members of the Human Rights Committee at the Shura Council, said the paper.
She said the workshop would provide the opportunity to hold consultations with committee members and also with Bahrain Human Rights Society members – Albawaba.com
