ALBAWABA - UN Deputy Spokesperson Farhan Haq made statements to journalists at the daily press briefing.

In the midst of a session when a resolution supporting Palestine's full UN membership and increased rights for observer members came up for voting, Haq took questions on Israeli Permanent Representative Erdan's symbolic act of shredding the UN Charter.

Haq did not address explicitly the "theatrical actions" that ambassadors performed throughout their talks. Rather, he emphasized the UN Charter's sanctity as the organization's founding instrument and the duty of all member states to uphold it.

Haq displayed a copy of the UN Charter to underscore its significance and continuity, stressing that such acts were inconsistent with the UN's diplomatic spirit.

Symbolically tearing the UN Charter, Erdan accused nations who support Palestine's UN membership of disregarding it in his speech to the UN General Assembly.

This event occurred after a resolution supporting Palestine's granting of extra rights as an observer state and a review of Palestine's UN membership in the UN Security Council was adopted by the UN General Assembly.
