The venue for next week's UN-sponsored conference of Afghan groups on their country's political future has been moved from Berlin to Bonn, the United Nations said Wednesday.

Spokesman Fred Eckhard said Lakhdar Brahimi, the top UN official who convened the conference "preferred getting out of the hubbub of the city to a more private place."

Eckhard said the conference, due to start Monday, would be "in a nice secure location near Bonn -- itself a small, livable city."

Delegates would meet in "a chateau that has been turned into a conference center," he said, but he declined to identify it.

Informed sources said the talks would be at the Petersberg conference canter outside Bonn -- UNITED NATIONS (AFP)
