ALBAWABA - A major step toward Ukraine's integration with Europe has been taken with the formal start of its accession discussions to the European Union (EU).
The EU Presidency's Foreign Minister Hadja Lahbib launched the intergovernmental meeting, starting EU-Ukraine membership discussions, likely to last years. Lahbib called the occasion a turning point in EU-Ukraine ties in her speech.
"This is a historic moment for all of us and marks a turning point in our relations," he said. She repeated the EU's criticism of Russia's actions in Ukraine and its support for Ukraine's sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity"
The EU reaffirms its unwavering support for Ukraine's independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders, as well as Ukraine's inherent right to self-defense against Russia's aggression," stated. Lahbib stressed the EU's commitment to supporting Ukraine's security with international partners.
Lahbib recognized the accession discussions' hurdles but voiced faith in Ukraine's desire to succeed. "Today's accession talks will be difficult. We believe you will persevere and finish this. Your efforts will be supported. "We eagerly await your EU membership," she said.
Ukrainian Prime Minister Denis Shmyhal, addressing via videoconference, echoed Lahbib, calling it a momentous day for Ukraine and Europe. Shmyhal believed the EU would accept Ukraine's negotiating position document. "Ukraine's future membership is the best response to the current challenges facing Europe and is a unique opportunity to strengthen the EU," he said.
Ukraine petitioned for EU membership on February 28, 2022, four days after the Russian invasion, and was given candidate status on June 23, 2022. On December 23, 2023, the EU summit decided to begin membership talks. This rapid advancement, 2.5 years after the application, is unique in EU history. It is also the first time the EU has had membership discussions with a warring nation.
