President of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, has been awarded the 'World Food Day Medal' by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in recognition of contributions made by him for the poor around the world, reported Khaleej Times.

The medal for Sheikh Zayed was presented by FAO Director-General Jacques Diouf to Deputy Prime Minister Sheikh Sultan bin Zayed Al Nahyan at a meeting in Abu Dhabi Saturday.

"We have selected His Highness Sheikh Zayed for the medal this year in appreciation of his great contributions to help the poor in the world and his tireless efforts which have transformed this barren desert into a green oasis," Diouf told reporters.
