The Tunisian opposition news source <i>Tunezine</i> has reported Monday 28 November that a large police force mounted a siege against the Kairouan section of the Tunisian League for the Protection of Human Rights to avoid a conference on the subject of the Tunisian electoral code.
The reporter Adel Thabet wrote that the Kairouan section of the Organization had invited its own members and other democratic organizations and parties. The authorities once again prevented such a meeting taking place after what Thabet describes as the “electoral masquerade” of 24 October.
The President of the local section, Massôud Romdhani was called by the local police Sunday, but reaffirmed his right for free speech and to organize whatever conference he desired and to invite whomever he wished for discussions.
According to <i>Tunezine</i>, police are preventing human rights activists from entering the city of Kairouan. Names of people prevented from entering the city are well known democratic activists Néjib Chebbi, Ayachi Hammami, spokesperson of the Democratic Initiative, Mohamed Jmour (member of the managing committee of the Human Rights League), Dr Mustapha Ben Jâafar and Dr Khélil Zaouia (member of the managing committee of the Human Rights League).
There are reports that police have already attacked people at the conference including Hamma Hammami, spokesperson of a democratic organization.
