Tribal violence resulted in 11 people dead and more than 30 injured during gunfights in two Yemeni provinces in a time span of 24 hours, tribal sources said Wednesday.
"Seven people were killed and 18 others injured Wednesday in two separate gunfights between armed tribesmen in Al-Baida province," 150 kilometers east of the capital Sanaa, a tribal elder told AFP.
"Four people were killed and 14 wounded in clashes pitting members of the al-Bahm tribe against members of the Al-Tuini tribe" in Ibb province south of Sanaa late Tuesday, he said, under condition of anonymity.
A Yemeni police official said Monday that four people had been killed and 10 wounded in a shootout between members of the same tribe.
On Sunday, five people were killed and four wounded in two other tribal shootouts.
Clashes between tribes, or between security forces and armed groups, are common and often deadly in Yemen, a country with a tribal structure where the number of firearms held by civilians is officially estimated at more than 60 million, an average of more than three per inhabitant.
Last month, the Yemeni government issued a ban on carrying firearms in the capital and in other major cities. (Albawaba.com)
