A blast rocked central Baghdad on Sunday night, killing three Iraqi police officers, police and hospital officials said.
Medical sources said another eight people were injured in the blast at about 10:45 p.m. in the Karada district of central Baghdad. The district harbors an Iraqi Interior Ministry compound, the Australian Embassy and a building that houses U.N. offices.
Meanwhile, the British government dismissed accusations on Sunday that it is using British soldiers in Iraq to boost George W Bush’s political position ahead of the American presidential election. Responding to reports that military chiefs are resisting US requests for British forces to be deployed in more dangerous areas of Iraq, Health Secretary John Reid dismissed claims that the move would be a "political gesture".
"For people to suggest that there is some tawdry political deal here, I think, diminishes the effort that has been made by our soldiers on the ground," he told BBC television. (albawaba.com)
