A group of Syrians who started on Tuesday a sit-in strike opposite to the European Union (EU) and the United Nations (UN) commissions in Damascus appealed to secretary general Kofi Annan and the EU to work for lifting the Israeli military and economic siege imposed on the Palestinian people.
University professors, lawyers as well as cultural, artistic and social figures took part in the protest.
The strikers conveyed a statement to Toufic bin Amarah, the representative of the UNDP and to Andrew Blackmoor, the administrative director at the EU commission, in which they deplored the “campaign of genocide and suppression as well as the imposition of the siege on Arab citizens in the Occupied Territories, launched by the Israeli government led by Ariel Sharon.”
They also singled out the Israeli drive to try Israeli Knesset’s Arab member Azmi Bishara “for highlighting the fake Israeli democracy and defended courageously the legitimate right of Arabs to fight the Israeli occupation of Palestine, Syrian Golan Heights and south Lebanon.”
The statement underscored the need for putting in effect the UN resolutions on Israel’s pull out from all the occupied Arab territories and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital. (Albawaba.com)
