ALBAWABA - Armed opposition factions in Syria declared on Friday that they had effectively taken control of the Scientific Research Center in the New Aleppo district of Aleppo city.

The offensive coincides with ongoing fierce fighting in northwest Syria between Syrian government troops and opposition fighters. Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and affiliated groups shelled parts of Aleppo early Friday, focusing on areas controlled by the government, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. Rocket strikes on city university residences were part of the raid, which resulted in property damage and civilian casualties.

The attack on the Aleppo university campus claimed the lives of four civilians, according to the Syrian state news agency. The residential facilities were also severely damaged as a result of the attack.

Since intense fighting began in Aleppo province on Wednesday, the number of people killed in the recent escalations has increased to 242. One of the most intense offensives in recent memory was the massive attack carried out by HTS and its allies.

Tensions in the already war-torn region have increased as a result of the hostilities, which are centered in northwest Syria. The attack on Syrian government forces has been spearheaded by HTS, regarded as one of the region's most powerful armed groups.

As violence intensifies, observers point out that the recent escalation highlights how precarious the security situation in the area is and prompts worries about a possible humanitarian crisis.

With no obvious indications of a de-escalation, the continuous conflict is still taking lives and uprooting residents.
