A mortar shell fired from Syria hit the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights on Thursday, the Israeli military said Thursday.

"There was no damage or injuries and the soldiers conducted a sweep in the area of the blast," a  spokeswoman told AFP.

The spokeswoman refered to the blast being linked to the "internal situation in Syria", perhaps indicating that the Israeli military authorities are not treating the shell as deliberately fired.

Over the past month, the Golan Heights has witness fierce fighting between the Syrian government and opposition forces. However, the situation in Golan has been tense since the Syrian conflict began 27-months ago.

Israel occupied and annexed the Golan Heights plateau in 1967, a move that was never internationally recognised. As a result, Israel is techncially at war with Syria.
