Syrian President Bashar Al Assad has used chemical weapons in Syria's two-year conflict, the Israeli military's top intelligence analyst said on Tuesday, according to reports.

Israeli newspaper Haaretz reports that Brigadier-General Itai Brun told a security conference in Tel Aviv on Tuesday: "To the best of our understanding, the regime used lethal chemical weapons in a number of incidents - most probably Sarin gas."

The US and other Western governments have previously said the use of chemical weapons in Syria would be a 'red line' forcing military intervention in the conflict.
