ALBAWABA - The Switzerland-hosted Ukraine Peace Summit is scheduled to begin tomorrow in Bürgenstock, Switzerland, with the objective of igniting more peace efforts amid the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war that started in February 2022.
The summit, which is slated to take place in the canton of Nidwalden on June 15–16, aims to find diplomatic solutions to the continuing conflict by adhering to UN Charter values and international law. It aims to provide a strong foundation for a comprehensive, just, and long-lasting peace.
Anticipating participation from ninety nations and organizations—among them prominent personalities such as Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz—the conference aims to promote a cohesive strategy for future peace initiatives.
However, China and Russia are conspicuous by their absence. Switzerland said it would be willing to invite Russia, but Moscow said no, citing issues with the schedule and structure of the meeting. China also announced that it will not be attending, pointing out that the summit's scheduled talks fell short of expectations.
There have been considerable security arrangements for the summit, with the deployment of up to 4,000 Swiss military officers to guarantee safety. Ten to fifteen million Swiss francs have been set aside, the majority of which will go toward security protocols.
Global issues like food security, nuclear threats, the status of prisoners of war, and the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine are anticipated to be major subjects of discussion during the summit.
Turkey's participation was confirmed by Swiss Confederation President Viola Amherd, who was awaiting formal word from South Africa and Brazil.
