A man suspected of having killed a New Zealander serving with the UN forces in East Timor last year has surrendered to the Indonesian military, a report said Tuesday.
The man, only identified as YB, 29, a former commander of the Laksaur pro-Indonesian militia in East Timor, surrendered to soldiers at a border military post in Atambua, West Timor, the state Antara news agency said.
YB has been on the wanted list for the murder of Leonard Manning, a 24-year old peacekeeper from New Zealand near the border with West Timor in July.
The head of the Indonesian border security taskforce, Colonel Irwan Kusnadi told Antara that YB surrendered on January 10.
After confirmation of his identity, YB was handed over to the police on Tuesday.
"The man has been put under security guard and will face intensive interrogation on suspicion of the crime of murder against a UN soldier," the local district deputy police chief, Commissioner Koeshartono (Eds: one name) said.
Indonesian troops searching for weapons, found Manning's missing automatic rifle at YB's hideout near the East Timorese border during a raid in October last year.
YB managed to flee and had since been on the Indonesian police wanted list.
Kushartono also said that YB will be tried in Indonesia and will not be handed over to the UN transitional administration in East Timor -- JAKARTA (AFP)
