At least two people were killed and eight injured Monday after a car exploded near the United Nations headquarters in central Baghdad.
It exploded while the vehicle was being examined at a checkpoint as it tried to enter the UN compound.
"The bomber drove up and was engaged by an Iraqi security individual just before the checkpoint," a U.S. 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment spokesman, Capt. Sean Kirley, told reporters.
That policeman was killed, although it was not clear whether he was shot or died in the explosion, he added.
Kirley said eight other Iraqi policemen were injured. He said he didn't know whether any U.S. troops were near the scene at the time, but none was wounded.
It came a day after Iraqi attackers killed two American soldiers in a mortar attack and a third died from a roadside bomb blast.
A few weeks ago, an attack on the UN headquarters in Baghdad killed the top envoy to Iraq who was among more than 20 people who died in the bombing.
A few hours after the attack in Baghdad, an explosion rocked a police station in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul, according to Sky News.
According to the report, a car had exploded outside a police station in Mosul, causing several casualties. (Albawaba.com)
