The Sudanese government has denied a report that opposition forces seized a government military camp in east Sudan, the press said Saturday.
Government troops repelled an attack this week by forces of the opposition National Democratic Alliance (NDA) on Osman Dikna military camp north of border town of Kassala, Armed Forces spokesman General Mohamed Osman Yassin was quoted by the independent Al-Rai al-Aam daily.
"Our troops drove back the Alliance forces from Osman Dikna camp after inflicting heavy casualties on them," said Yassin without giving figures on those casualties.
He described a claim by the NDA that it had seized the camp as part of "psychological warfare aimed at raising the morale of its men."
Al-Rai al-Aam also quoted Kassala State Governor Ibrahim Mahmoud Hamid as confirming that the attack was repelled, adding that the government troops "are now inside the camp".
KHARTOUM REITERATES COMMITMENT TO EGYPTIAN-LIBYAN INITIATIVE.
Sudanese Minister of External Relations, Mustafa Osman Ismail, has affirmed Sudan Government's commitment to the Egyptian-Libyan initiative, reported Sudan’s official news agency (SUNA) on Friday.
Speaking at the regular information forum of the Council of Minister Thursday, Ismail was quoted by SUNA as saying that the government has provided all what could be secured for convening of the comprehensive national dialogue, explaining that the other party is still in the first square.
He pointed out that the coming days would witness positive developments concerning the initiative, particularly that a meeting of the joint technical committee on the initiative is scheduled for next May – (Agencies)
