Sudanese Foreign Minister Mustafa Osman Ismail on Monday denied news reports on transporting former Speaker

of the Sudanese Parliament Hassan Turabi to Qatar, according to Petra News Agency.

Such news is "categorically groundless," said Ismail, who is currently visiting Jordan to take part in Amman regular Arab summit underway Tuesday.

Turabi is still detained in one of Khartoum’s jails pending court hearings. He was arrested last month after he declared an understanding with John Garang’s Sudanese People's Liberation Army (SPLA). Hundreds of his disciples are reported to be in custody, too.

Turabi fell out with President Omar Bashir in December 1999, although the Islamist leader was considered the spiritual father of the Salvation Front which brought Bashir to power in 1989 – Albawaba.com
