ALBAWABA - The State of Palestine has received official recognition from Slovenia. Just before tonight's parliamentary session, the opposition Slovenian Democratic Party (SDS) reportedly retracted its referendum plan, which they had originally presented to parliament the day before, according to a post on the government's social media site, X.
52 of the 90-seat parliament's members present voted to recognize the State of Palestine, according to the article.
"Today's recognition of Palestine as a sovereign and independent state sends a message of hope to the people in the West Bank and Gaza," said Slovenian Prime Minister Robert Golob on social media.
SDS Chairman Janez Jansa had already demanded a referendum, claiming that the choice to recognize would have long-term negative effects on the nation.
In a meeting last week, the Slovenian government had previously discussed recognizing the State of Palestine.
Following the meeting, Prime Minister Golob said that, in accordance with international law and pertinent decisions of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), Palestine would henceforth be recognized as an independent and sovereign state within its 1967 borders.
