Israel's Likud prime ministerial candidate Ariel Sharon, speaking to the ultra-orthodox journal Kfar Habad, declared Tuesday that "the Oslo accord is an agreement that no longer exists. Period," reported Haaretz newspaper.

"The Oslo agreement was founded on the understanding that conflicts be resolved in peaceful ways. The agreement self-destructed when the Palestinians resorted to violence and Barak continues negotiating while shots are being fired, he explained.

The paper reported Tuesday that the ultra-orthodox Shas party decided to formally support Sharon in his prime-ministerial campaign.

Shas intends to use all resources at its disposal, including its activists and organizations, to support the Sharon campaign, said the paper.

Last month, the ultra orthodox party voted against dissolving the Knesset for re-electing its members following the resignation of Prime Minister Ehud Barak.

Shas's decision led former prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu to withdraw from the candidacy of premiership.

In July, Shas withdrew from Barak's cabinet, protesting what they considered compromises offered by Barak to the Palestinians at the Camp David summit in Washington -- Albawaba.com
