Saudi Arabia has banned cabinet ministers from holding positions in companies, the official Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported Monday.

SPA quoted a statement issued after a cabinet meeting as saying "ministers are barred from chairing or serving in businesses."

It said ministers with commercial posts would be allowed to serve out their contracts.

SPA added that if a minister is currently holding such combined jobs, he could proceed to complete his term of office at the company' and never to renew it as long as he is member of the cabinet.

Ministers, however, would be allowed to hold positions in the state-owned oil company Aramco, it said.

The cabinet did not give a reason for the decision, said Reuters - (Agencies)
