Iraqi President Saddam Hussein has assured his Yemeni counterpart Ali Abdullah Saleh that Baghdad no longer has weapons of mass destruction, an official said in Sanaa on Saturday.
In a message to Saleh, the Iraqi leader said Baghdad "has not had weapons of mass destruction for many years, and UN arms inspectors who operated in Iraq from 1991 to 1998 know this is a fact," according to the official, cited by AFP.
"All plants and equipment previously used to produce such weapons have been destroyed," Saddam added. In addition, Saddam Hussein said his country had agreed to allow the arms inspectors back after a break of nearly four years, "in accordance with the terms agreed with the UN secretary general and with the participation of the Arab League chief, in order to remove any pretext for a military strike against Iraq."
