Russian President Vladimir Putin and Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak on Monday discussed obstacles facing the Middle East peace process Monday, Egypt's state-owned MENA news agency reported.
Putin's call to Mubarak touched on "the importance of making every effort to reach a just and lasting peace based on international law," MENA said, quoting Egyptian Information Minister Safwat al-Sherif.
Palestinian President Yasser Arafat met Putin in Moscow Friday in a bid to win Russia's support for declaring Palestinian statehood, but Putin cautioned him against making hasty decisions.
Mubarak and Putin also discussed the importance of "reaching a peace that will give stability to the people of the region and not a brittle peace," Sherif said.
Mubarak said Sunday that the Palestinians could delay declaring statehood beyond their self-imposed deadline of September 13th for a final peace accord with Israel - CAIRO (AFP)
