Israeli and German negotiators have met to discuss the long unanswered question of whether relatives of the 11 Israeli athletes, who died at the 1972 Munich Olympics, will receive compensation, reported The Associated Press, quoting a magazine as saying.

“For 28 years, nothing has happened. So, it's time that we finally settle the matter,” the lead Israeli negotiator, Arie Schumer, told Der Spiegel magazine. An Israeli delegation has already met with Erwin Huber, chief of staff for the governor's office in Bavaria state, of which Munich is the capital, the magazine said.

German officials had previously rejected all claims for compensation by the families of the victims, said the AP.

But Der Spiegel reported that Bavarian officials, along with federal and city authorities, are looking into what amount of compensation they might give to the relatives of the athletes.

On September 5th 1972, members of Black September Palestinian faction stormed an Olympic Village apartment house at the Munich Games, killing two Israeli athletes and holding the others hostage in an effort to gain the freedom of 200 Palestinian prisoners held by Israel.

In a botched rescue attempt after a 20-hour standoff, nine more Israeli athletes were killed, as well as five Palestinians and a German policeman – Albawaba.com
