Dar Al-Sharq press group will sell in mid-December the International Herald Tribune and Lebanon's The Daily Star in Qatar, a spokesman said on Tuesday.

The group, which owns leading Arabic daily Al-Sharq and English-language paper The Peninsula, will also print and distribute Malayalam-language newspaper Varthamaman, which is being launched simultaneously in India's Kerala state.

"This will bring something new to the Gulf and offer readers a wider international perspective," Al-Sharq managing editor Hassan Haidar told AFP.

"It is also an indication of press freedom in Qatar where the Emir has abolished censorship," he added.

Meanwhile, Dar Al-Sharq Printing, Publishing and Distribution Co. also plans to sell the Paris-based Tribune and an edited version of The Daily Star in neighboring Gulf states. (Albawaba.com)
