Thirteen more people, including 12 armed Islamic extremists, have been killed in Algeria in violence which began nine years ago with a fundamentalist insurgency, press reports said Sunday.
On Thursday, acting on information from a captured "terrorist", civilian self-defense militias hunted down and killed 10 guerrillas at El Ancer in the Jijel region 300 kilometers (185 miles) east of Algiers, the El Watan daily said.
Troops on Saturday killed two others in the Djlefa region, Liberte reported.
A security officer was shot dead on Saturday at the university in Chlef, 200 kilometers (125 miles) east of the capital, Le Quotidien d'Oran reported.
Outside the town on Friday, an armed group injured two people and set seven cars ablaze when it attacked a village celebration, the paper said.
A soldier was injured on Friday evening in a clash with an armed group at Bordj Mili in the Mascara region, 350 kilometers (220 miles) west of Algiers, added Le Quotidien d'Oran.
Press reports indicate that around 40 people have been killed since the beginning of January. At least 330 people were killed during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan from late November to December.
More than 100,000 people have died in Algeria since fundamentalists took up arms in 1992 after the army called off the second round of elections that the Islamic Salvation Front was poised to win -- ALGIERS (AFP)
