New project opportunities in Oman, including Oman-Dutch initiatives at the burgeoning industrial zone Port of Sohar, will come under the spotlight at MEED’s Port of Sohar conference, to be held in Muscat on November 15 - 16.
Held under the patronage of HE Maqbool bin Ali Sultan, minister of commerce and industry, the two-day forum will showcase new business opportunities at Port of Sohar, across sectors such as oil and gas, logistics, metals, manufacturing, and petrochemicals.
Opening discussions are Mohamed al-Harthy, Oman’s minister of transportation and communications, and the Netherlands’ prime minister Dr Jan Peter Balkenende.
According to Edmund O’Sullivan, the conference chairman, the event will provide valuable insight into upcoming tenders, existing projects and areas for development.
He said: “For companies looking to do business with the Port of Sohar, whether as the backbone of their business in the Sultanate or to strengthen their focus on the Middle East, the government initiatives at Port of Sohar will have wide-reaching effects.
“The Sultanate’s key decision-makers will be present to share information with companies looking to do business there; meanwhile, international companies – in particular, the Dutch – will be able to share case studies and best practices.”
Sohar Industrial Port is situated in the Al-Batinah region in Oman. The industrial port has been developed alongside the government’s platform for growth, the Oman Vision 2020. The plan highlights the need for the diversification of the Oman economy, greater involvement of the private sector, and a balanced development of the various regions in Oman.
Oman’s Ministry of Transport and Communication, was responsible for the construction of the port infrastructure.
The port is managed by Sohar Industrial Port Company (SIPC), a joint venture between the Oman government and the Port of Rotterdam in the Netherlands.
The conference will focus on utilising growth opportunities in fields as diverse as chemicals, logistics, metals, oil and gas, plastics, power and water, manufacturing and shipping in the port.
