Palestinian refugees in this region of southern Lebanon launched a campaign Friday to boycott US-made goods in solidarity with the Palestinian uprising against Israel.

Dozens of youths torched different kinds of US-made products over piles of US and Israeli flags at the Bass, Rashidiyeh and Burj Shemali refugee camps near this port city, an AFP correspondent saw.

At the camps entrances, young men and women held banners calling for the boycott of products made in the United States.

"Translate concretely your support to the children of the Intifada, who are throwing stones against Israeli tanks and who are facing the shots with their bare chests," a banner read.

They also raised a picture of 12-year-old Palestinian Moahmmad al-Durra, who became the symbol of the Intifada after dying by Israeli fire while cowering in his father's arms during a hail of gunfire.

"It is the price of a US-made cigarette box or a drink which paid for the bullet that killed Mohammad Durra," said a banner.

A placard, signed by the Boycott Committee of US-Made Products," called for "searching for substitutes to American goods."

Camp residents told AFP the committee was made up of representatives of several Palestinian opposition parties, including the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) and the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine (DFLP).

Some 367,000 Palestinian refugees reside in Lebanon, half of whom are in 12 camps scattered across the country -- TYRE, (AFP)
