The Palestinian Authority said Saturday it was recruiting 5,000 men for its security forces to safeguard areas in the Gaza Strip that Israel intends to evacuate this summer. The recruits will unarmed, owing to Israeli restrictions on the number of weapons Palestinian security forces can carry, Interior Ministry spokesman Tawfiq Abu Khousa said, according to The AP.
Meanwhile, Palestinian medical sources confirmed early Saturday that a young Palestinian in his 20s has arrived dead at a local hospital in the Gaza Strip. Security sources and eyewitnesses said that Baker Hammouda, an activist in Hamas was killed when an explosive device he was working on at his house accidentally went off. Two other people were injred in the blast, RNA said.
