An American soldier was killed and another injured in a mortar attack on their camp near Baghdad on Sunday, the U.S. military said Monday. It added the troops were from the 13th Corps Support Command.
Meanwhile, the United States said it wanted the UN Security Council to vote on a draft resolution on the June 30 transfer of power in Iraq as diplomats said the council was close to a deal.
After a special Sunday session to discuss the draft, the American envoy to the UN, John Negroponte said a final version of the draft would be put forward late Monday "with the idea" of a vote on Tuesday.
France presented two amendments to the text, including an article that would require the interim government in Iraq to approve any "sensitive offensive operations" by US-led forces who will remain after June 30.
"We understand that this is in principle agreed, so we hope it will be in the resolution," said France's UN ambassador, Jean-Marc de la Sabliere.
According to AFP, the council on Sunday reviewed letters from US Secretary of State Colin Powell and Iraqi Prime Minister Iyad Allawi pledging that Baghdad and the multinational force will cooperate on any military actions. (Albawaba.com)
