Tunisian Lahbib Boulares has been chosen as the new Secretary General of the Rabat-based Arab Maghreb Union (UMA), according to Maghreb Arabe Presse

Boulares, a former Minister of Defense, of Foreign Affairs, of Information and Culture, and a former Speaker of the Tunisian parliament, was named to hold the post, by a proposal made by the Tunisian President. The other Maghreb leaders supported the proposal.

Boulares was installed in his new position Thursday in Algiers during the 19th session of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the UMA member countries.

Mohamed Benaissa, Moroccan Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, who participated in the Council Session, told the new Secretariat General that Morocco and all Moroccan governmental institutions would assist and support him, so that he would be able to carry out his mission in the best way possible.

Boulares replaces the outgoing UMA Secretary General, Mohamed Amamou, also a Tunisian, who could not carry on his mission due to ill health. (Albawaba.com)
