US military sources announced Monday that more than 100 Afghan opposition fighters have been killed by joint US and Afghan troops in recent military operations aimed at securing the country before upcoming elections on September 18.

About 65 were killed in the southern Zabul province last week, and about 40 in the eastern province of Kunar in recent weeks, according Reuters.

US forces, on the other hand, which amount to 20,000 in Afghanistan, have suffered the greatest casualty rate in recent weeks since the Taliban lost power in the country, according to military sources.

An additional 10,000 NATO-led troops are also helping with security for the upcoming elections.
