Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak said Wednesday he had informed the US that the deteriorating situation in the Middle East could escalate "in a serious manner" against America's interests if it gave up its role in the peace process.
Mubarak’s comments came in an interview with the Egyptian magazine Al Musawwer, which will come out on Friday, said the official Kuwait news agency, KUNA.
Mubarak said that during his recent visit to Washington, he informed the US administration that the wise step for Washington was to take the initiative to help the Palestinian and Israeli sides before conditions further deteriorated.
Mubarak told the magazine that he believed that the right step to be taken in order to preserve the ceasefire and stop the exchange of accusations between the two sides was to have “neutral observers in the confrontation areas to determine which side started the violence.”
He added that there was agreement among all sides to start the political negotiations “once the violence calms [down].” – Albawaba.com
