Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak met Syrian officials in Damascus on Monday to discuss the situation in Iraq and the Palestinian areas.
Syria's President Bashar Al-Assad returned to Damascus Sunday night following two short visits to the kingdoms of Bahrain and Saudi Arabia.
According to Reuters, Syrian officials said before the talks with the Egyptian side the discussions would relate to "what is happening in Iraq, with the goal of ending the suffering of its people and protecting its unity and territory", a Syrian Foreign Ministry statement said.
The Foreign Ministry said the talks with Mubarak also would touch on Israel's efforts to crush the Palestinian uprising erupted in September 2000.
Meanwhile, the United States is demanding that Syria close down the Islamic Jihad offices in Damascus. The American ambassador in Israel, Daniel Kurtzer, told Foreign Minister Binyamin Netanyahu about this decision. On his part, Netanyahu thanked the United States and said that this is the right way to deal with "terrorism." (Albawaba.com)
